Five days is the sweet spot. If you want a genuine taste of Tanzania's northern circuit without burning through two weeks of annual leave, this is the itinerary I recommend most often. It is tight enough to feel focused but generous enough to avoid that exhausting dawn to dusk pace that budget itineraries demand. Three parks, not five. Quality over quantity. Depth over distance.
This is the framework we use most frequently at Westway Safaris for both first time and returning visitors. Every trip is customised to the individual, but this structure has been refined through hundreds of departures and it consistently delivers that transformative feeling our clients describe when they land back home.
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Your guide collects you from your Arusha hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport in the morning. The drive to Tarangire takes roughly two hours along a paved road. It is comfortable, scenic, and a gentle introduction to the landscape as farmland gives way to open savannah.
Tarangire is the park most first time visitors underestimate, and the one they talk about most afterward. Its ancient baobab forests create a surreal, almost prehistoric atmosphere that no other East African park can match. Between June and November, Tarangire hosts one of the highest concentrations of elephants in Africa with herds of 200 or more moving along the Tarangire River. But even outside dry season, the resident wildlife is outstanding. Tree climbing lions (yes, they do this here too), leopards in the riverine forest, enormous python sightings, and over 500 bird species.
You arrive at your lodge in time for lunch, settle in, and head out for an afternoon game drive as the light turns golden. This first afternoon drive often sets the tone for the entire trip. There is something about seeing your first wild elephant up close that recalibrates everything you thought you knew about nature.

Day 2: Full Day in Tarangire
A full day in Tarangire allows you to explore beyond the main road circuits. Morning game drives penetrate deeper into the park and the Silale swamps in the south are exceptional for buffalo herds, waterbuck, and predators. If you are staying on a private concession, you can add walking safaris and night drives, which are not permitted inside the national park itself.
The midday hours at your lodge are not wasted time. They are some of the most restorative moments on safari. A swim, a nap under canvas while listening to birds, a long lunch watching elephants move through the trees below your deck. This is the slow, immersive approach that separates a luxury safari from a checklist tour.
Day 3: Tarangire to Ngorongoro Crater
Morning game drive in Tarangire, then drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. approximately three hours. The journey climbs from dry lowland savannah up through lush highland forest, and the temperature drops noticeably as you gain altitude. You will stop at the crater rim viewpoint, and no matter how many photographs you've seen, the first look down into the caldera takes your breath away. It is eighteen kilometres across and 600 metres deep. an entire ecosystem contained within a volcanic amphitheatre.
Settle into your crater rim lodge for the night. Sundowners on the rim, watching the light change across the crater floor below, is one of the iconic moments in African travel.

Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater Floor and Drive to the Serengeti
Early morning descent into the crater. arrive by 6:30am before the midday crowds. The crater floor is one of the densest concentrations of wildlife on earth. You are virtually guaranteed sightings of lion, elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, flamingo, and hippo. The elusive black rhino. one of the last wild populations in East Africa. is spotted regularly here, though never guaranteed.
The game drive circuit on the crater floor takes four to five hours. By late morning, you ascend the crater wall and drive onward to the Serengeti. roughly three hours from the rim to the central Seronera area. The transition is spectacular: highland forest gives way to the Malanja Depression, then suddenly the vast Serengeti plains open up in front of you, stretching to the horizon in every direction.
This is usually the moment clients go quiet. Not because they are tired, but because the scale of it simply stops words.
Day 5: Full Day in the Serengeti and Departure
Dawn game drive in the Serengeti. The early morning light on these plains is unlike anywhere else. warm, low, and infinite. Depending on the season and herd positions, your guide will target the areas with the best current activity. The Serengeti's big cat density is extraordinary. this is where most of those BBC wildlife documentary sequences were filmed, and for good reason.
After a final morning drive and brunch at your lodge, you transfer to the Seronera airstrip for a scenic flight back to Arusha (approximately one hour). This avoids the long return drive and gives you an aerial perspective of the landscape you've just experienced on the ground. which is worth the flight cost alone.
Alternatively, the road transfer back to Arusha takes approximately seven hours. We typically recommend the fly-out for the 5-day itinerary to maximise game time and minimise fatigue on your final day.

How to Extend This Itinerary
Five days covers the essential northern circuit beautifully, but if you have more time, the most impactful additions are a Zanzibar beach extension (3-4 nights on the coast post-safari), gorilla trekking in Rwanda (add 2-3 days via a short flight from Arusha to Kigali), or simply more time in the Serengeti. two full days instead of one gives you a dramatically deeper experience, especially during migration season.
The difference between a good safari and an unforgettable one is almost always one extra day. If you can stretch to seven days, do it. You will thank yourself when you are sitting at home scrolling through your photographs.
