Gorilla Trekking: Uganda vs Rwanda. An Honest Comparison.

By Christian Ayo, Founder of Westway Safaris · Updated March 2026

We book gorilla treks in both Uganda and Rwanda. We do not have a financial incentive to push one over the other. So here is the honest comparison that most safari websites avoid giving you because they want you on a call before they reveal anything useful.

The gorillas are the same species. The encounter is equally life-changing in both countries. What differs is the permit price, the lodge experience, the trek character, and what else you can do before and after. Understanding these differences clearly is how you make the right decision for your trip.

Choose Rwanda If...

You want the premium experience with minimum logistics

Rwanda is built for efficiency and luxury. Kigali is one of the cleanest, most modern cities in Africa. The drive to Volcanoes National Park is 2.5 hours on good roads. The lodges near the park, Singita Kwitonda, One&Only Gorilla's Nest, Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, are among the finest wildlife properties anywhere in Africa. If you want the gorilla encounter wrapped in world-class comfort with the shortest possible travel time, Rwanda is the answer.

Rwanda also offers Golden Monkey trekking in the same volcanic highlands, a lighter, more playful trek that complements the gorilla experience well.

Choose Uganda If...

You want more value and a broader wildlife itinerary

Uganda's permit saves $700 per person over Rwanda. For a couple, that is $1,400. That saving alone can fund an extra two nights at a quality lodge or a chimpanzee trek in Kibale Forest.

Uganda's most significant advantage is what lies beyond the gorillas. Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest (the highest primate density on Earth). Murchison Falls, where the Nile forces through a 7-metre gap in the rock. Tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The Nile at Jinja. Uganda is the single most diverse wildlife destination in East Africa after Tanzania. If you want gorillas as part of a broader trip, Uganda is the stronger choice every time.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest itself is wilder and more ancient in character than Rwanda's Volcanoes Park. The forest genuinely resists entry. For many travellers, that rawness is the draw.

Can You Do Both?

Yes. Some guests do gorilla treks in both Uganda and Rwanda on the same trip. The countries share a border and the parks are relatively close. This is typically a 7-10 day itinerary and makes sense for guests who want to compare the experience or who want maximum time with gorillas. We design these combined itineraries regularly.

Combining Gorilla Trekking with Tanzania or Kenya

The Ultimate East Africa Itinerary

Our most comprehensive itinerary combines a Tanzania or Kenya safari with gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda. A typical flow: fly into Kilimanjaro, 5-7 days on safari in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro (or the Masai Mara), fly to Entebbe or Kigali, 3-4 days of gorilla trekking, optional Zanzibar beach extension. This is 10-14 days and represents the full breadth of what East Africa offers. We handle every flight, transfer, permit, and lodge across all countries.

Permit Booking: What You Need to Know

Book Early. Permits Sell Out.

Both Uganda and Rwanda issue a limited number of gorilla permits per day (one permit = one trekker = one hour with one gorilla family). During peak season (June-September, December-February), permits sell out months in advance. We recommend booking 3-6 months ahead. We handle the entire permit booking process for you, including payment to UWA (Uganda) or RDB (Rwanda). Once confirmed, your permit is guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a gorilla permit cost?
Uganda: $800 per person. Rwanda: $1,500 per person. Both grant one hour with a habituated family. The permit is the single largest cost in any gorilla trekking trip.
Is Uganda or Rwanda better for gorilla trekking?
The encounter itself is equally profound. Rwanda offers luxury lodges and easy access from Kigali. Uganda offers lower permit costs, wilder forest, and the option to combine with chimpanzees, Murchison Falls, and Queen Elizabeth NP. Choose Rwanda for premium convenience. Choose Uganda for value and broader wildlife.
How far in advance should I book?
3-6 months for peak season. 1-2 months for off-peak, but availability is never guaranteed. Book as early as possible.
How fit do I need to be?
Moderate fitness is recommended. Treks can involve steep climbs through dense forest at altitude (2,000-2,500m). In Bwindi, the terrain can be muddy and challenging. In Rwanda, it tends to be slightly easier. Porters are available at both locations and are strongly recommended. Age is not a barrier. We have arranged treks for guests in their 70s.
Can I combine gorillas with a Tanzania or Kenya safari?
Yes. This is one of our most popular itineraries. Fly from Tanzania or Kenya to Entebbe (Uganda) or Kigali (Rwanda). We handle all flights, transfers, permits, and lodges across countries.
