Safari from New York: Planning Your East African Adventure from the US

Flights, visas, costs, and the best time to go. Everything an American traveller needs, plus why booking direct with a local operator saves you thousands.

An East African safari is the most talked-about trip among travellers who have done it. And it is more accessible from the US than most people think. One overnight connection through Amsterdam, Istanbul, or Doha and you are stepping off a plane at Kilimanjaro Airport with the peak of Africa's tallest mountain visible from the tarmac.

We work with American guests regularly. We understand the planning process, the time investment, the questions about safety and health, and the expectation of service quality. Here is everything you need to plan your trip.

What Americans Need to Know

Visas

Tanzania: E-visa required ($50). Apply at immigration.go.tz at least 2 weeks before travel. Also available on arrival at JRO but pre-applying saves time.

Kenya: ETA required ($30). Apply at etakenya.go.ke. Processed within 72 hours.

Uganda: E-visa required ($50). Apply at visas.immigration.go.ug.

Rwanda: Visa on arrival. Free for US citizens for stays under 30 days.

Health & Safety

Yellow fever vaccination is required for Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. See your doctor or a travel clinic 6-8 weeks before travel. Anti-malaria medication is strongly recommended (Malarone is most commonly prescribed in the US). Bring strong insect repellent (DEET-based). We provide a comprehensive health and packing advisory with every booking.

Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda are all safe for tourism. You are with a professional guide at all times during your safari. Our guides carry first aid kits, satellite communication, and are trained in wildlife safety protocols.

Time Zone

East Africa Time (EAT) is UTC+3. That is 8 hours ahead of New York (EST) or 7 hours ahead during daylight saving time. Most guests adjust within a day, helped by the early-morning safari schedule (you are up at 5:30-6:00am for game drives anyway).

Why Book Direct Instead of Through a US Agency

US-based safari agencies charge a 20-40% markup on the same trip a local operator provides. They do not own vehicles in East Africa. They do not employ guides. They subcontract everything to operators like us in Arusha. Booking directly saves you $1,000-$3,000+ per couple on an average trip. You get the same lodges, the same parks, the same experience, with a direct WhatsApp line to the person running your safari.

How long is the flight from New York to Tanzania?
18-20 hours with one connection. Best routes are via Amsterdam (KLM), Istanbul (Turkish), or Addis Ababa (Ethiopian). All are overnight flights arriving the following afternoon.
Is East Africa safe for American tourists?
Yes. Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda are all safe and well-established tourism destinations. You are accompanied by a professional guide throughout your safari. Major crime against tourists is extremely rare in the national parks and safari areas.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. We require all guests to have travel insurance that covers medical evacuation. Most US health insurance does not cover international medical emergencies. Companies like World Nomads, Allianz, or IMG Global offer affordable safari-specific coverage. Budget $100-$200 per person.
