Family Safari East Africa: The Trip Your Kids Will Never Forget

Private vehicles. Flexible schedules. Child-friendly lodges. A guide who makes your 8-year-old feel like a wildlife expert. This is how families do East Africa with Westway.

We arrange family safaris constantly. Families with toddlers, families with teenagers, three-generation trips with grandparents. The common thread is that private vehicles make everything work. Your kids can ask the guide a hundred questions. You can stop when they need a bathroom break. You can cut a game drive short if the little ones are done, or extend it if they are completely absorbed. No group. No pressure. Just your family.

Best Ages for Safari

Under 5: Possible, But Plan Carefully

Very young children can do a safari, but the long drives (3-5 hours) and early mornings are challenging. We recommend shorter itineraries with drives broken into 2-hour segments, lodges with swimming pools, and a Zanzibar beach extension to balance the bush days. Some premium lodges have minimum age policies (usually 5 or 6 years), so we select family-friendly properties specifically.

Ages 5-12: The Sweet Spot

This is the ideal age range for a family safari. Children are old enough to sit through a game drive, point out animals, use binoculars, and absorb what is happening around them. Many lodges offer junior ranger programmes, nature walks with guides, and bush skills activities. The Serengeti, the Mara, Ngorongoro, and Amboseli all work exceptionally well for this age group. Zanzibar or the Kenya coast makes a perfect decompression after the bush.

Teens (13+): Everything Opens Up

Teenagers can do walking safaris, photography drives, cultural visits, and engage with guides at an adult level. Gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda requires a minimum age of 15 for the permit. A combined safari and gorilla trek is one of the most powerful experiences we can arrange for a family with older children. Kilimanjaro is also an option for fit, motivated teens.

What We Handle for Families

Child-friendly lodges: We select properties with family rooms, pools, and no restrictive minimum age policies.

Dietary needs: Kids' meals, halal options, allergies, all communicated to every lodge in advance.

Flexible pacing: Shorter morning drives, longer lunch breaks, afternoon pool time, evening game drives only when the kids are up for it.

Educational value: Our guides are naturalists. They engage children directly, explain animal behaviour, identify tracks, and turn every drive into a learning experience your kids will talk about for years.

Health preparation: We provide a complete family health advisory including malaria prevention, sun protection, hydration, and what to pack for children of different ages.

What is the best age for kids on safari?
Any age on a private safari. Ages 5-12 are ideal for engagement. Under 5 is possible with shorter drives and pool breaks. Teens can do walking safaris and gorilla trekking (15+).
Is safari safe for children?
Yes. You are with a professional guide at all times. Children stay in the vehicle during drives. Lodges have safety protocols. The main health consideration is malaria prevention, easily managed with medication and repellent.
Which country is best for families?
Tanzania (diversity + Zanzibar beach) and Kenya (concentrated wildlife, shorter drives) are the most popular for families with young children. Uganda adds gorilla trekking for families with teens 15+.
Are there child discounts?
Most lodges offer child rates for under-12s, typically 30-50% off adult rates. Some camps offer free stays for under-5s sharing with parents. Park fees for children under 5 are waived in most Tanzanian parks. We apply all available discounts automatically.
